Here's a small bit of information you may find helpful during the game, or just for RPing in general!

Currency

Something that always irritates is when the currency in games is grossly exaggerated. The conversion rate, as determined from the books is;
£5 = 1 galleon = $10
£0.30 = 1 sickle = $0.60
1 penny = 1 knut = 2 cents
(approximately)

To see a conversion to your own currency, check out the Currency Converter on the Harry Potter Lexicon.

Please make the prices of things generally similar to real life. Shoes don't cost 200 galleons.... unless they're REALLY nice shoes.

Creating Characters

If you're having problems coming up with your character, here are a few reference links you can check out;
How to Avoid Making a Mary Sue
How to Make an Original Character
Some other stuff about Mary Sues

And, if you're making a villain, check this out; Villain motivations

And, most importantly, the Universal Mary-Sue Litmus Test which will tell you if you're verging on a self-insertion. (And the HP specific one, but the universal is sufficient really)

The Unforgivable Curses

The Unforgivable Curses are banned in all society. Using any of these three curses on another human being carries a mandatory life term in Azkaban, though it cannot be traced immediately who has used them, investigations can be carried out upon the user's wand.

Imperio - The Imperius Curse

In game, this curse can be used to control someone's actions. This can only be done with full consent from the opposing player for every action, so discuss at length before using.

The curse itself is complicated and, if you aren't experienced at using it, the person being control will appear stiff and almost zombie-like in their movements and actions. It's also easier to break free from when the person casting is inexperienced.
More experienced users, such as Rodolphus Lestrange, can control people to act as natural as they would when free.

"It was the most wonderful feeling. Harry felt a floating sensation as every thought and worry in his head was wiped gently away, leaving nothing but a vague, untraceable happiness. He stood there feeling immensely relaxed, only dimly aware of everyone watching him."
—Harry Potter under the Imperius Curse

One person may only cast the Imperius curse on one person at any one time. Casting on someone else breaks the first spell. The stronger and more experienced one becomes, the further their victim can be from them when under the spell.

The Crucio - The Cruciatus Curse

This curse causes the victim to experience extreme pain. The pain is all emcompassing, and cannot be placed in any specific place in the body. The spell does not allow the victim to fall into unconsciousness, and can wake them from unconsciousness to experience it.

To cast it, one must TRULY intend to hurt the victim. It cannot be used purely on whim. The more hatred, fear, anger or pure desire to harm channelled into the spell, the stronger and longer it can be held for.

No one can suffer the spell in silence.

Avada Kedavra - The Killing Curse

To use this spell, one must truly intend to kill the victim. The spell cannot be used unless the end result of death is whole-heartedly desired. More than one crime of passion has involved the killing curse. All it takes is one moment.
It is incurable and irreversible.
Please ask the mods before your character uses this spell. EVER. Unless you play a Death Eater.

Spells in Harry Potter

There are a lot of spells set in canon in the books as well as the videogames. If you're looking for inspiration, take a look on these two lists;

Spells in Harry Potter 1
Spells in Harry Potter 2

Bear in mind, some of the spells in the second link aren't appropriate for this game...
If there's nothing there you want, then make one up! Just don't go God-modding!
